Dresses and their stories

What’s behind the dresses…

Dresses are often seen as truly feminine pieces of clothing, and often enough a certain dress is connected to very specific feelings, situations and stories. We wanted to get to know the stories behind some of the dresses and listen to their wearers. On which occasions do we wear dresses and what do they mean to us?

Meet five women and hear their personal dress stories here…

Alexandra Winzer

On which occasion did you wear the dress?

To my wedding at the end of May in 2019 at the Villa Blumenfisch in Berlin.

Where did you buy the dress?

I bought my wedding dress from the lovely Kathi at Brautzimmer in Berlin-Altglienicke. Her bridal store has a special concept – it’s located at her home and immediately makes you feel intimate and comfortable. She doesn’t sell random off-the-rack dresses but chooses each model lovingly.

Which moment or anecdote do you associate with the dress?

My dress fittings were such a highlight during the wedding preparations. I wanted to share that event with my mum, my maid of honour and my three bridesmaids. We were quite a few people but it just worked for me and we had so much fun. I knew exactly what my dream dress was supposed to look like, so I tried on 30 different dresses in five stores. Number 29 ended up being my final choice. It was quite the dress-craze!

The most beautiful moment was definitely when my mum led me to the altar and my husband saw me for the first time. I’ll remember that beautiful moment forever.

Have you ever worn the dress since then?

Actually yes, because we re-took some photos of the fittings after we got married. And we have an after-wedding photoshoot planned as well that I’m really looking forward to.

On which occasion did you wear the dress?

I actually first wore this dress to the very shoot where you guys took my picture. I had only bought it shortly before.

Where did you buy the dress?

As is common in the vintage community, I bought it from another collector, or vintage-lover, in Berlin. We often pass on these pieces from one lady to the next. I love using platforms like Etsy where you can find beautiful and mostly well-kept dresses.

Which moment or anecdote do you associate with the dress?

I don’t have a specific story behind this dress but it still means a lot to me. It was one of the first old dresses I bought when I first got into vintage fashion. It’s from the ’40s and still in amazing condition. In the meantime, I have sold many of the dresses from that first period. This one, however, is and has always been one of my favourites that I’ve had for many years. I love the dainty pattern and light fabric. Like many of my old dresses, it’s handmade – when you turn it inside out, you can see every single step of the process of how it was made. A little greeting from the past.

Have you ever worn the dress since then?

Very often – as soon as it gets hot outside, I’ll wear it again. And I’ll keep wearing it for years to come.

On which occasion did you wear the dress?

To a picnic in the garden.

Where did you buy the dress?

At For Love and Lemons.

Which moment or anecdote do you associate with the dress?

A relaxed weekend in the countryside with my family, with freshly picked fruit, a great book and lots of fresh air.

Have you ever worn the dress since then?

Only once because the weather hasn’t been too great. But I’m sure I’ll be wearing it lots more in the summer.

On which occasion did you wear the dress?

I wore it for my boyfriends’ birthday on the Seychelles.

Where did you buy the dress?

Secondhand, I’ve had it for six or seven years now.

Which moment or anecdote do you associate with the dress?

When editing my wardrobe, I always think about whether I could use the space on a hanger for something else. Is it enough to wear a dress once a year? Our trip to the Seychelles should be enough to justify some space in my suitcase for this dress. I didn’t even think about it too much when I put it on for my boyfriend’s birthday dinner. About two hours later, it had become THE dress that I wore when Stefan proposed to me. Last year in November, on a warm summer night in the Seychelles.

Have you ever worn the dress since then?

Yes! On a rainy day in the Netherlands to take some pictures for you – which was lovely considering the great memories.

What is the story behind your dress?

I LOVE dresses. I have basically only worn dresses exclusively for about five years because 1) They are SO easy to wear 2) They are comfortable (at least the ones that I like that are loose and fit like pajamas!) and 3) They can grow with your size. I spotted this Marimekko dress, which is a classic design from their archives a few years ago and found out that they were going to re-release it. I contacted several Marimekko stores and was put on a waiting list. I then found out that it was going to be sold as a legacy collection at Anthropologie so I then contacted Anthropologie headquarters…I asked my social media audience…I was desperate. In the end, it was released and thanks to one of my readers, I nabbed it immediately. I think it’s the one piece of clothing I’ve put in the most amount of work to get.

I didn’t have a special occasion in mind when I went on my search, but to me it’s perfection. The pattern is bright and cheerful but not corny. It’s rainbow without being too in your face about it. The shape is loose and summery but also references the past.
