The mantelpiece – a small cultural history
A crackling fire reminds us of cosiness, snuggling up for winter or romantic dinners. But it has been a long way since our ancestors started to feel comfortable by the fire. We are showing you this development from an open fire to an electric fire and tell you how the mantelpiece became an object for decoration – and even status.
