»Digital Ladies Travel« – Den Haag

The Hague, a classy but trendy city near the beach

The Hague, a city located at the beach always brings a different vibe than any other kind of town. Therefore, you must include some solid beach time when in this majestic city. Follow along with my city guide.

Before we get started, what you must know about The Hague. The Hague is a city on the western coast of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of South Holland. It is also the seat of government of the Netherlands and home to the royal family. You simply can’t miss The Binnenhof when you visit The Hague, but I left it out as I’m sure you’ll pass by and there are for more interesting places to spot!

Starting in The Hague in the early morning, our first need is to get our hands on a delicious cup of coffee. Last year, the people of the famous Lot Sixty One Coffee Roasters opened a new venue in The Hague. Let’s go in and order a cup of joe! Still hungry, get yourself some breakfast too. Depending on the weather you can enjoy it in the spacious café or enjoy it in their perfect little garden in the sun.

The Hague: Coffee in the morning

From Lot Sixty One it’s a short walk to the Papestraat and Noordeine, where we can enjoy even more coffee at the café of Filtro or perhaps some shopping in the local shops? Make sure not to miss Couqou! Hidden in a little alley at the Noordeinde, this shop is the perfect hidden gem in the Royal Shopping District! They sell beautiful handmade furniture and interior design elements. From the alley you can see the tower of the Palace Church.

The Hague: Exploring the Zeeheldenkwartier

We continue our way a bit outside the city centre towards Zeeheldenkwartier. A nice upcoming neighbourhood filled with cute shops and perfect lunch spots, where you can surely hang with the locals. Start your route at the Weimarstraat and it will lead you along many cool hot spots until you finish at the Prins Hendrikstraat. Have lunch at Eefs, Lolapalooze or Appeltje Eitje and drop by for some plant heaven at Bar en Zo or WAUW Warenhuis. Vintage shopping for your house is best done at Sprinkel & Hop! Make sure to check out both streets as there’s so much more to discover. Great kids stores, local brewers and fancy restaurants.

The Hague, city of art and host to my two favorite museums!

The Hague has a lot to offer for all of you art lovers. Let’s start with the Gemeentemuseum. The building, by architect Berlage, is considered a piece of art itself. The rooms make a great backdrop for all your new Instagram photos and during summer, you can enjoy your lunch outside in the garden room. Designed by architect H.P. Berlage, it is striking not only for its spacious interior, natural light and modern colour scheme. Currently showing Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf with a phenomenal photo exhibition until the 12th of May, so hurry up!

I can also offer you a visit to the Voorlinden. Well on its way to being the most Instagrammed museum in the Netherlands and located in the very high-high-end Wassenaar, a 15 minute bus ride from the central station. Museum Voorlinden has a number of works in its own permanent exhibition. These pieces have their own intimate places ithin the museum where they can be viewed to their greatest advantage. »Sky Space«, »The Pool«, and famous works by Ron Mueck and Richard Serra. Oh how I love this museum with its beautiful light. Next door you can have some kroketten on bread by Holtkamp, it doesn’t get more Dutch than this. After lunch, have a stroll through the beautiful gardens.

The Hague: An afternoon at the beach, watching the sunset hit the sea

Obviously, all the tourists know their way to the beach in The Hague, but they don’t know the way to the best places where you can enjoy the sun amongst locals. We divide the beach by three. Noorderstrand, Boulevard area and Zuiderstrand. If you want to avoid the crowds choose Noorder- or Zuiderstrand. Beach clubs The Shpre and De Staat are great for lunch and drinks. Or stay at the Boulevard area where you can find your way to The Fat Mermaid and enjoy the Ferris wheel on De Pier during sunset. This is also the place to be for a perfect view over the beach and The Hague.

The Hague: Lazy evenings in the city

For dinner, we move back towards the city where we find ourselves at De Kade. A perfect locally run restaurant with the cutest terrace, especially by night. Locally produced food (where possible) and only natural wines on the menu! Make sure to try the local beers they serve!

After this perfect but very long day, we lay down our head at La Paulowna Boutique Hotel. It’s everything you’d expect from a boutique hotel. Perfectly decorated rooms with picture perfect lighting. Located in the centre, but in a very quiet area. If you’d rather go clubbing the night away, one last tip for you is Pip! Pip might just be the best club in the whole region at the moment. Located in an old fire station, you’ll find perfect underground parties to keep you going all night long.
